Learning limited

The status Meta applies to an ad set that failed to leave the learning phase.

Definition

An ad set that does not reach roughly fifty optimisation events within a week of exiting learning is marked learning limited. It keeps delivering, and it keeps delivering badly, because it never gathered enough to work out who to find.

Why it matters for HVAC

It is the most common structural failure in contractor accounts, and it is almost always self-inflicted through over-segmentation. A media buyer builds separate ad sets per service, per postcode and per audience, which feels thorough and leaves every one of them starved.

It is also what makes month-to-month results swing for no visible reason. A limited ad set is not converging on anything, so this month and last month are two samples of noise.

How it is measured

Ads Manager shows the label per ad set. The fix is nearly always consolidation: fewer ad sets with more budget each, or a wider audience, or a cheaper optimisation event further up the funnel.

A worked example

A contractor runs nine ad sets on $4,500 a month. Every one is learning limited, cost per lead ranges from $31 to $140 with no pattern, and each month tells a different story. Consolidated to three ad sets on the same total, all three clear the threshold within a fortnight and the spread narrows to $48 to $61.

These figures are invented to show the arithmetic. They describe no real business.

Where this is demonstrated

The Advantage+ against manual pillar scores every listed agency on what they document here, and gives you the questions that tell you which one you are being sold.
