When Meta is the wrong place for your budget
A directory of Meta ads agencies telling you when not to run Meta ads. There are four cases, and they are common.
Your phone is not answered properly
This is the first one because it disqualifies more contractors than the other three combined. Meta produces leads at volume and at speed, and a lead called back tomorrow morning is mostly a wasted lead. If the office is already dropping calls, or leads sit in an inbox overnight, more leads make the problem larger rather than smaller.
Fix the follow-up first. It costs less than a month of ad spend and it improves every channel you already run.
Your service area is too small to sustain it
Meta needs an audience large enough to keep finding new people. A contractor covering three or four postcodes with a few thousand qualifying households will saturate that audience in weeks, frequency will climb, and the same faces will see the same ad until the cost per result stops making sense.
There is no clever targeting fix for an audience that is simply too small. Direct mail and local search usually do better.
You cannot fund the learning phase
Roughly fifty optimisation events per ad set per week is what Meta needs to deliver predictably. Below that the account never stabilises, results swing month to month, and you are paying for the platform to guess. Whether you can reach it depends on your cost per lead and your budget, and the arithmetic is worth doing before the first month rather than after the third.
You need the work this week
Meta is demand generation. It reaches people before they are looking, which is its strength and also means the lead-to-job timeline is longer than search. A homeowner who has just typed "emergency ac repair near me" into Google is a different person from one who paused on your video.
If the schedule is empty right now and the business needs bookings this week, search and local service ads answer that question and Meta does not. Several agencies on this ledger will tell you the same thing, which is worth noticing about the ones that do.
What this site is not saying
None of this means Meta does not work for HVAC. It means it works under conditions, and the conditions are knowable in advance. An agency that never raises any of these before taking your money has told you something about how they will handle the account.
